Facts About Eating Disorders

  •  An eating disorder an is when someone begins to fear food and gaining weight.  A person with an eating disorder often over-exercises, refuses food, or takes laxatives and purges. Even if that person is not  over weight, they tend to still see themselves  as "fat", which is a body distortion. An eating disorder is never healthy for ANYONE.
  • Nearly half of all Americans know someone with an eating disorder. 
  • 95% of those who have an eating disorder are between the ages of 12 and 25.
  • 50% of girls between the ages of 11 and 13 see themselves as over weight.
  • 80% of 13 year olds have attempted to lose weight.
  • One half of 4th grade girls are on a diet.
  • The Periwinkle Ribbon stands for eating disorder awareness.
  • February is National Eating Disorder Awareness Month.
